Galerie Campagne Première is pleased to present the second solo exhibition by Kanoko Hashimoto, from January 29 until March 12, 2011.
The exhibition "triple point" encompasses three series on which the artist has been working for a number of years. The monochrome light-blue of the images in the series "Heiter" (Merry) is the horizontal, infinite space above the earth. The surface area of each image relates to the individual volume of a standing person photographed by the artist from above. Kanoko Hashimoto determines the size of the surface of the painting from this volume, and thus represents the aerial space above the person as a connection between the earth and the universe. For image titles, she does not use a person's names, but rather the amount of space occupied, measured as a fraction of a square kilometer. Thus the area of the artist herself, for example, equals 6.09e-8 sqkm.

For the second series of the exhibition, "On One Day", Kanoko Hashimoto draws a flower or plant one hundred times on cigarette paper measuring 3.5 x 7 cm using meltwater or rainwater that she collected on the relevant day. Minimal reliefs arise from the traces of the fleeting material on the paper. Kanoko Hashimoto prepared 100 drawings of a plant on each of six different days, gathering each set of 100 drawings into a book.

For the third series, "Madonna", Kanoko Hashimoto drew the Madonnas of various churches using holy water on cigarette paper. She links her method of depiction to a postcard of the saints acquired on site.

Kanoko Hashimoto has devoted herself over the years to a limited number of groups of works that allow her to pursue a depiction based on the world and representation with the aid of abstract, conceptual approaches. Central themes of her work include time and ephemerality, as well as the spatial and acoustical manifestations of life. Her conceptual series span painting, drawing, sound documents and light phenomena. Her respect for minimal and invisible emanations of the creatural hint at the responsibility of humanity for its world.

In thermodynamics, the triple point occurs when the three phases of a substance are in equilibrium. The point of departure for Kanoko Hashimoto's exhibition at Campagne Première is, in this sense of "triple point," a balanced turn toward humanity, nature and art. Just as the scientific "triple point" is a condition of both balance and material undecidedness, the three groups of works by Kanoko Hashimoto maintain fluid boundaries between visualizations of humanity, nature and art.

Kanoko Hashimoto was born in Kameoka, Japan in 1960 and studied at the art academies of Kyoto and Stuttgart. She came to Germany on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and has received grants from the Art Foundation of Baden-Württemberg and the Cité des Arts, Paris. Kanoko Hashimoto lives and works in Stuttgart.
